GeM Seller Registration 2026: Step-by-Step Guide
GeM seller registration is free and takes 45–90 minutes — but only if you have all three prerequisites ready. Most registrations that fail or get stuck do so because of one missing document, one Aadhaar OTP issue, or one character mismatch between certificates. This guide covers every step and every common failure point.
Quick Summary — GeM Seller Registration 2026
- • Before you start: Udyam certificate, GST certificate, PAN, bank account + IFSC, Aadhaar linked to an active mobile number
- • Time to complete: 45–90 minutes (in one sitting — no save function)
- • Cost: Free. gem.gov.in is the only portal you need.
- • Activation timeline: 24–48 hours for bank verification + 2–5 working days for account activation
- • Most common blocker: Aadhaar OTP sent to an old SIM. Fix this at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra before attempting registration — it takes 7–10 working days.

One-Line Verdict
If you have Udyam + GST + active Aadhaar-linked mobile, you can register today.
If any of those three are missing, fix them first. The GeM portal will not let you proceed without all three. There are no workarounds or exceptions for MSME sellers.
OwnBiz Clarity Score
Independent assessment of the GeM registration process across four dimensions.
Accessibility
7/10
Free and open to any Udyam-registered MSME, but the prerequisite stack — Udyam + GST + Aadhaar-linked active mobile — blocks a significant number of first-timers who have one missing piece.
Speed
6/10
Registration itself takes 45–90 minutes. Bank verification adds 24–48 hours. Account activation takes 2–5 working days. First order can take weeks or months after that. The process is fast; the payoff is slow.
Value
9/10
Access to ₹4 lakh crore+ in annual government procurement with zero marketing spend is genuinely rare. No other channel in India offers this reach without customer acquisition cost.
Transparency
5/10
The portal UI is confusing, error messages are unhelpful, and the Under Review state can last weeks with no communication or status updates. You are expected to figure out what went wrong yourself.
Composite
6.8/10
Solid for a government registration process. The value is exceptional; the transparency and speed to first revenue hold the score down.
Step-by-Step Registration Process
- 1
Gather your prerequisites before opening the portal
You need all five before starting: Udyam Registration Certificate (download from udyamregistration.gov.in), GST registration certificate, PAN card, bank account number + IFSC code, and Aadhaar linked to your current active mobile number. If any of these are missing or outdated, resolve them first. The portal has no save function — a missing document mid-way means restarting from scratch.
- 2
Go to gem.gov.in and select Seller — not Buyer
Open gem.gov.in and click Sign Up. On the next screen, select Seller. This is a common mistake — many first-timers accidentally begin the Buyer registration flow, which requires government employee credentials. If you see fields for organisation type and ministry, you are in the wrong flow. Go back and select Seller.
- 3
Enter your Udyam Registration Number
Type your Udyam Registration Number in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000. The portal auto-fetches your business name and registered address from the Udyam database. Verify that the fetched details match your GST registration exactly — any mismatch here will cause rejection in the next step. If the details are wrong, update your Udyam record first.
- 4
Complete Aadhaar OTP verification
Enter the Aadhaar number of the business owner or authorised signatory. An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked to that Aadhaar. This step fails if your Aadhaar is registered to an old SIM card you no longer use. If the OTP does not arrive, visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra to update your mobile number — this takes 7–10 working days.
- 5
Enter your GST details
The portal cross-verifies your GSTIN against the GSTN database. If your business name on GeM (fetched from Udyam) does not match your business name on the GST registration exactly — including punctuation and abbreviations — the portal rejects the GST verification. Pvt Ltd and Private Limited are treated as different names. Compare both certificates character by character before entering your GSTIN.
- 6
Add your bank account for penny drop verification
Enter your bank account number and IFSC code. The portal sends ₹1 to verify the account is active and accepts NEFT. This takes 24–48 hours. If the penny does not arrive, check that your account does not have low-value NEFT restrictions — common in Jan Dhan and basic savings accounts. You must use an account that can receive NEFT transfers.
- 7
Submit for GeM verification and wait for account activation
After bank verification is confirmed, submit your application. Your account status changes to Under Review. GeM activates accounts within 2–5 working days in most cases. You will receive an email confirmation when your account is active. Check your spam folder during this period — activation emails from GeM frequently land there.
What the Official Guide Does Not Say
The portal times out after 20 minutes and does not save your progress
If you leave the GeM registration form idle for 20 minutes, the session expires. Any data you entered is lost and you must start from the beginning. Complete the registration in one continuous sitting. Have all documents open and ready before you begin.
Even one character difference between your Udyam and GST names causes rejection
The name verification is exact — spaces, punctuation, and abbreviations all count. Pvt Ltd vs Private Limited, & vs and, missing comma — any of these will fail the cross-verification. Download both certificates and compare them character by character before starting your registration.
Account suspension emails go to spam
GeM sends account-related notifications including suspension notices and verification requests by email. These consistently land in spam folders. Check your spam folder every day during the 7–14 day window after registration. Missed suspension notices mean your account may be deactivated while you think it is still under review.
Government buyers on GeM almost never check their own ratings
GeM allows sellers to rate buyer departments after order completion. The rating system exists but has no practical effect — most government departments have never checked their buyer profile. Do not rely on buyer history or ratings when deciding which orders to accept. Treat every buyer as unknown.
Common Rejection Reasons and Fixes
Aadhaar OTP not received
Your Aadhaar is linked to an old SIM you no longer use. Check which number is registered at uidai.gov.in. Visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or India Post office with your original Aadhaar and new SIM to update the mobile number. Takes 7–10 working days to reflect.
Name mismatch between Udyam and GST
Download both certificates and compare the business name character by character. If they differ, apply for a non-core GST amendment at gstin.gov.in to update your GST business name to match Udyam exactly. Takes 3–7 working days.
Bank verification penny not received
Check that your bank account is active and accepts inward NEFT transfers. Jan Dhan accounts and some basic savings accounts have low-value NEFT restrictions. If blocked, use a different current or savings account that accepts unrestricted NEFT.
Account stuck in Under Review beyond 10 working days
Raise a support ticket at gem.gov.in/helpdesk with your Seller ID, registration date, and Udyam number. If no response within 5 working days, contact your state GeM SPV (State Procurement Vehicle) directly — they can escalate to the GeM operations team.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I register on GeM without a Udyam registration number?
No. Udyam registration is a mandatory prerequisite for MSME sellers on GeM. The portal will not proceed past the first screen without a valid Udyam Registration Number (URN). If you do not have one, register free at udyamregistration.gov.in first — it takes 15–30 minutes.
My Aadhaar is linked to an old mobile number. What do I do before registering on GeM?
Visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or India Post office with your original Aadhaar card and new SIM card. Request a mobile number update. This takes 7–10 working days to reflect in the UIDAI database. Do not attempt GeM registration until the update is confirmed — the OTP will not arrive on your new number until UIDAI updates it.
The GeM portal rejected my registration due to a name mismatch. How do I fix it?
Download both your Udyam certificate and GST registration certificate. Compare the business name character by character — including punctuation, spacing, and abbreviations (Pvt Ltd vs Private Limited). If the GST name differs, apply for a GST amendment at gstin.gov.in under non-core amendments. This takes 3–7 working days.
How long does GeM account activation take after submission?
GeM says 2–5 working days. In practice, activation can take 7–14 working days during peak periods (financial year end, budget season). If your account shows Under Review beyond 10 working days, raise a helpdesk ticket at gem.gov.in with your seller ID and registration date.
Can I register multiple businesses on one GeM seller account?
No. Each business (each GST registration and Udyam number) requires a separate GeM seller account. If you own two businesses, you need two separate GeM accounts — one for each GSTIN.
What is the penny drop bank verification on GeM?
After you enter your bank account number and IFSC, GeM sends ₹1 to your account to verify it is active and can receive NEFT transfers. If the penny does not arrive within 48 hours, check that your account accepts NEFT transactions — some Jan Dhan and basic savings accounts have low-value NEFT restrictions that block this step.
My GeM account shows Under Review for more than 2 weeks. Is this normal?
It is common, especially during busy periods, but not ideal. Raise a ticket at gem.gov.in/helpdesk with your Seller ID, registration date, and a brief description. If no response within 5 working days, contact your state GeM SPV (State Procurement Vehicle) — they can escalate directly to the GeM operations team.
